Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve is situated in the eastern part of Nepal and shares a boundary between Saptari and Sunsari which was established in (1976) mainly to preserve the habitat for the remaining population (a little over 160) of rare Wildwater buffaloes. The wildlife reserve, north of a kilometer-long barrage across the Koshi River, is spread over 175 sq km. Koshi Tapu in Nepal is known for its high Nepal bird-watching site concentration of migratory marsh birds, making it an important bird flow destination.
The Koshi Barrage is the best place in Nepal to see migratory and resident marshland birds. The vast expanse of open water created by the barrage, and the marshes, lagoons, sandbanks, mudflats, and arable land that lie around it offer an outstanding wetland habitat, thus making Koshi Tappu one of the Finest Bird-Watching Sites in Asia.
