Makalu Base Camp is an adventurous trek to the gigantic Makalu peak. Makalu is a menacing eight-thousander, those peaks above 8000m. Moreover, it is the fifth tallest mountain in the world. The peak is also considered one of the most difficult ones to ascend. Our enthralling trek will lead through the trails of Makalu Base Camp 5000 m above the ground. The pathway takes you to high-altitude terrains, snow-clad landscapes and ethnic Himalayan lifestyle on a solitary trek to Makalu base camp.

Makalu Base Camp Trekking route locates in the area of Makalu Barun National Park and Conservation Area in the heart of Eastern Nepal. The main essence of this trek is Makalu Barun National Park in Solukhumbhu and Sankhuwasabha district. Taking you through the astonishing breathtaking place in the eastern part of Nepal, the trek rewards you some jaw-dropping views of the snowy peaks and the valleys. Not to mention, the trek lets you explore the Makalu Barun valley having a wide range of altitudinal and climatic variations. The area offers a remarkable and diverse habitat for a rich variety of flora and fauna.

The major feature of this trek is the rich natural paradise include beautiful mountains, pristine forest, and a wide variety of plants, animal life and the simple and warm-hearted local people with rich and varied customs. Moreover, the trek lets you explore lower reaches of Barun and Arun valleys where communities of Rai, Sherpa, and Shingsawa (Bhotia) farmers reside. Nevertheless, economically poor and isolated, they retain a rich cultural heritage. They have kept the same the treasures, the culture and unique traditions of the Makalu Barun. Very few visitors have their feet here, but whoever visits here would never return empty-handed. This glorious trek will reward you with tons of memories and an unforgettable experience.

The 20-day trek to Makalu Barun is a perfect trip for nature and adventure enthusiast and who seek solace and tranquility during their journey. Moreover, it is a high altitude trek, which takes in lower landscapes of lush rhododendron forests, picturesque Gurung villages, river valleys, and the Makalu Barun National Park. This is a camping trek that will bring you adjacent to the untamed charm of Nepal's most remote outposts and the cherished cultures of its most isolated inhabitants. Passing through five different ecological zones, we view a diversity of flora and fauna as we go.

Day 01:

You will heartily be welcomed by our representative at the Tribhuwan International Airport. From thereon, you will be dropped at the hotel for relaxing. After that, you will be given a brief orientation of the Upper Mustang Trek by our representative.

Day 02:

After having our early morning breakfast, you will have a full day sightseeing plan at Kathmandu. Also popular as ‘the city of Temples’, you can visit the world heritage sites such as Boudhanath Stupa, Swayambhunath Stupa, Pashupatinath temple, Patan Durbar Square, Bhaktapur Durbar Square. Explore the beauty of the city, its culture, and tradition on this day. Furthermore, you will be prepared for trekking overnight. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 03:

After having an early morning breakfast, we take a flight from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar. It will be a quick 40 minutes to  Tumlingtar, the beginning point of our trek. During the flight, you will be rewarded with a spectacular aerial view of Ganesh Himal, Mt. Everest, Mt. Kanchenjunga and Mt. Makalu. After the spontaneous flight, we will stay overnight at Tumlingtar tent camp.

Day 04:

After an amazing flight to Tumlingtar, we initiate our trek towards Khadbari. We initiate our trek by heading upwards through the village of Kumal. Further, we move towards the subtropical forest of Sal trees that eventually gives way to the farmlands of Khandbari. Then, we will set up camp nearby at Mani Bhanjyang and explore the town for the rest of the day.

Day 05:

We have our early morning breakfast and take the main trekking route from Khadbari to Bhotebas. Then we climb steadily on the highland that separates the Arun River from its tributary, the Sabha, and finally reach Bhotebas. Overnight at Bhotebas.

Day 06:

Ascending to a pass at 1850m the trail offers a spectacular view of Chamlang, Makalu and Jaljale Himal. Then, it descends for a while to the next ridge, following the crest as it makes some ups and downs through rhododendron forest. Further, the cultivated fields disappear as the trail climbs to a pass at 1850m. The trail rewards you with a spectacular view of Chhamlang, Makalu and Jaljale Himal.

Day 07:

After having our early morning breakfast we head towards Num from Gogone. Wildering through huge rhododendrons forest, the trek takes you through an enchanting trail. Then, we head below Mure passing many estates of burned trees. Moving ahead to Num on a large and well-marked trail we explore these villages. There you can see the inhabitants and get to about their culture.

Day 08:

Spending overnight at Num, today we head towards Tashi Gaon. The trek initiates with an ascend above the Kasuwa Khola to Gyang at 1770m. From here we walk past a school through a forest area and terrace fields on the way to Rupisa. Further, the path traverses through meadows and several streams. Finally, climbing to the Sherpa village of Tashi Gaon.

Day 09:

Today will be a bit of a tough day as compared to other trek days. The trek goes through a lofty trail in a higher elevation. Ascending through the forest to a stream we move ahead onto a rim. Further, the path gets even steeper and passes a Kharka (grazing land). Finally, the trail follows a series of rugged stone stairs passing along a small lake on the top of the ridge. From here we reach Col Khongma.

Day 10:

After having our breakfast, we trek to Numbuck. The day begins with a sharp descent down a wooden narrow valley and continues on to cross the Barun Khola just beyond Tamatan Kharka take about 6-7 hours. Further, the trail can be slippery with numerous and rock falls often, so you have to walk carefully. After this, you follow the Barn Khola along its northern bank. On your way, you will be rewarded with a superb view of Chamlang (7290m), Peak 6 and 7. Also, the trail follows the ridge, climbs gently up to the Kike La (4127m) then descends through a forest.

Day 11:

Today we leave behind Numbuck and head towards Sarsung. After having our early morning breakfast, we initiate our trek Following the Barun Khola then ascend to Ripok Kharka. Further, the trail ascends alongside a moraine. Not to mention, spectacular views of Pyramid Peak awaits you on the way. Finally, you enter an alluvial valley and Makalu pops into view just before Sarsung.

Day 12:

After having our early morning breakfast, we head towards Makalu Base Camp. It is a gradual climb to a pass then you descend to a stream, cross on boulders to the B.C. Here we get astounding views of the south face of Makalu. The Base Camp is a rocky barren place with the large Barun Glacier beyond it. From here we can take a glance of the magnificent south face of Makalu and the complete panorama of Everest and Lhotse. Moreover, we can explore the surrounding lakes, glaciers and go for a short trek up.

Day 13:

After having our early morning breakfast, its time to head back to Numbuck. Taking our last

glimpse of Makalu, we descend down from the base camp. The trail goes along the Barun Khola ascending through the wooden narrow valley.

Day 14:

Today we head back to Khongma from Numbuck. We begin the trek with a steep climb from Dobate to Numbuk (Nambuk) and through a forest of firs and rhododendrons. Further, we traverse the Keke La, Tutu La (Shipton’s Pass) and Kauma La en route. Finally, we descend to Khongma Danda again.

Day 15:

The trek continues with frequent long and lofty descent cutting through the hillsides. The path takes us through thick forests and finally making it to the indigenous Sherpa village of Tashigaon. Retracing our steps as we exit the Makalu Barun National Park we descend down to the Barun River. Finally, we traverse through the hillside and come across villages and settlements as we move further down finally stopping at Seduwa again.

Day 16:

The trail includes both uphill and downhill walking today, with the first two or three hours being the harder one. We reach a high ridge around the midpoint of our road to Chichela, and then get a break and easier walking.Moreover, Chichela is a fun village to explore, and we’ll make it to camp with plenty of time to look around.

Day 17:

After having an early morning breakfast, we head back to Tumlingtar. The trek is a easy one as we descend down to Khadbari. Passing through forests, farmlands we reach Khadbari. We hike three or four hours downhill to arrive in Tumlingtar for lunch and then set up camp. Overnight at Tumlingtar.

Day 18:

The trekking journey to Makalu has come to an end. After having our early morning breakfast, we take a flight from Tumlingtar to Kathmandu. During the flight, you will be rewarded with a spectacular aerial view of Ganesh Himal, Mt. Everest, Mt. Kanchenjunga and Mt. Makalu. After the spontaneous flight, we will stay overnight at Tumlingtar tent camp.

Day 19:

Today we spend our entire day exploring the capital city Kathmandu. Also popular as ‘the city of Temples’, you can visit the world heritage sites such as Boudhanath Stupa, Swayambhunath Stupa, Pashupatinath temple, Patan Durbar Square, Bhaktapur Durbar Square. Explore the beauty of the city, its culture, and tradition on this day. Furthermore, you will be prepared for trekking overnight. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 20:

After having your breakfast, you can have a relaxing time shopping in the city. At the evening our representatives will drop you off at the Tribhuvan International Airport. Not to mention, you will be taking tons of memories of the trip.
