What kinds of accommodation is available during the Khopra Danda Trek?

Accommodation during the Khopra Danda Trek is mostly on basic teahouses and community lodges. Teahouses are mostly family-run whereas community lodges at higher altitude directly support livelihood and development of the village community. Hiking to Khopra Danda, you will experience cozy teahouse trekking. As Khopra Ridge is a remote and less trodden trek, facilities are basic. The rooms have thin walls, twin wooden beds, mattress, pillow and a blanket. Communal dining rooms are the norm in such traditional teahouses. Due to remoteness, upgrading to private rooms is possible in the lower villages of Tadapani and Ghorepani. In higher altitudes, private rooms are not available.

What kind of food can I get at teahouses?

You can get a variety of Nepali, Tibetan and western foods at teahouses during Khopra Danda Trek. Food options range from traditional Nepali Dal Bhat Tarkari (rice, lentils and veggies) to momo, soup, pasta, noodles, fried rice, eggs, pancakes, sandwiches, etc. The popular and smart choice is Dal Bhat since it is nutritious and comes with unlimited refills. You can also get hot drinks such as tea, coffee, milk and so on.

There is a moderate risk of altitude sickness during the Khopra Ridge Trek. The maximum altitude of the trek is 4,660 meters at Khayer Lake which carries a significant risk of altitude sickness. Altitude lies under 3,640m till Khopra Danda which is manageable with gradual pace. Khayer Lake lies at a higher altitude than ABC itself which can be risky if you neglect precautions. Therefore, our itinerary follows a very gradual pace without any rush. Also, our expert guides are trained to identify early symptoms and act accordingly to the situation. You should definitely follow their advice.

Make sure to drink at least 3 to 4 litres of water daily, get enough rest and eat nutritious foods. If you strictly follow this advice, the risk of altitude sickness becomes significantly lower. Guides also monitor your health daily and in case of emergency, they will advise descend or manage rescue.

Is travel insurance necessary for Khopra Danda Trek?

Yes, travel insurance is very important for the Khopra Danda Trek to protect yourself against unforeseen situations and heavy charges. Since the trek takes you over 4,000 meters altitude, the risk of altitude sickness becomes high. So, you must have comprehensive travel insurance for trekking to Khopra Ridge and Khayer Lake. Yes, vegetarian and vegan food are widely available at all teahouses during the Khopra trek. Teahouses serve vegetarian dishes on a daily basis which include dal bhat, noodles, pasta, fried rice, soup, pancakes, sandwiches and vegetables. Meat is very rare during high altitude trekking as it goes bad very quickly and can result in food poisoning if consumed. If you follow a vegan diet, let us know in advance so that we can arrange suitable meals with teahouses during your trek.

No, there are no ATMs on the Khopra Danda trail once you move past Pokhara. You should carry enough cash in Nepalese currency from Pokhara for your daily expenses on the trail.

Yes, teahouses provide charging facilities on the Khopra trek but availability may differ. Most teahouses on the lower section do provide charging service at an additional USD 2 to 3. We recommend you carry a high capacity power bank with yourself.

Yes, Wi-Fi is available at most teahouses at an extra USD 2 to 5 during the Khopra Danda Khayer Lake trek. The strength and speed of the connection can be patchy and weak at times due to remote terrain and bad weather. You can also use mobile data using a local NTC or NCELL sim. Coverage is pretty good on the lower trails but becomes weaker or completely unavailable at higher ridges and Khayer Lake section.

Yes, you can take hot showers in the lower villages during the Khopra Danda trek. Teahouses charge around USD 2 to 5 for hot showers. The availability becomes basic to non-existent at higher altitudes due to extreme cold or remoteness. It is wise to carry wet wipes and basic toiletries for days when a shower is not available.

For daily expenses, you should carry around USD 25 to 30 during Khopra Danda trekking. This amount will cover your personal expenses such as drinks, snacks, Wi-Fi, charging, showers and other optional purchases. Carry enough Nepalese rupees for the entire trek because ATM and card facilities are not available on the remote trail.
