Trekking in Upper Dolpo region takes you to one of the most isolated valleys of Far-western region of Nepal. Situated in the north of the Dhaulagiri Range on the borders of Tibet, it is a protected area in Nepal as the Shey-Phoksundo National Park lies within its borders. This trek offers some fantastic views of many Himalayan peaks and a huge amount of flora and fauna to be enjoyed. Not to mention, the view of Kanjiroba peak, Phoksundo Lake and the Dhaulagiri massif three are the major stand out on this Upper Dolpo trek. Expeditions to Dolpo region are quite challenging, but the rewards are totally worth it- the rare vegetations, unspoiled trek routes, and the Himalayan views.

Upper Dolpo trek is known for its off-the-beaten-trail, the unspoiled routes, and the unique vegetation that remains unexplored. The major inhabitants here are the Buddhist people. For this reason, you will get to explore many ancient monuments, gompas, and temples. Rich in cultural and also natural diversity, the trek rewards with some stunning views of the snow peaks. As well as you will get to explore some very interesting animals, as it is a place where both Himalayan blue sheep and the elusive snow leopard make their respective homes. Also, they have also contained a huge variety of wildflowers along with an extensive range of birds.

The trekking journey starts with a flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj and finally reaching Jhupal. Jhupal is the beginning point of our trek. Further, we head towards north through magnificent remote countryside the, farm villages and valleys with fabulous scenery of snow-capped peaks of Dolpo and Tibetan mountain ranges. Then, we reach our adventure destination at Shey Gompa via Lake Phokshumdo or Ringmo pristine, turquoise lake within its Nepal largest Dolpo National Park.

The Dolpo region was also chosen as the prime location for the 1999 Oscar Nominated film Himalaya. It is one of the remotest and least exposed areas of northern Nepal. The trek rewards you with rare opportunities to explore many unseen parts of the region. Also known as "The Forbidden Kingdom" in its own term, it is a perfect destination for adventure enthusiast.

Best time to visit

Spring and fall are the best seasons to visit Upper Dolpo when the temperature is pleasant, the skies are clear making your trekking journey joyous.

Day 01:

You will heartily be welcomed by our representative at the Tribhuwan International Airport. From thereon, you will be dropped at the hotel for relaxing. After that, you will be given a brief orientation of the Upper Mustang Trek by our representative.

Day 02:

After having our early morning breakfast, you will have a full day sightseeing plan at Kathmandu. Also popular as ‘the city of Temples’, you can visit the world heritage sites such as Boudhanath Stupa, Swayambhunath Stupa, Pashupatinath temple, Patan Durbar Square, Bhaktapur Durbar Square. Explore the beauty of the city, its culture, and tradition on this day. Furthermore, you will be prepared for trekking overnight. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 03:

After having our breakfast, we take a domestic flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj. Throughout the flight, we enjoy the spectacular views from up above. Located in the western region of Nepal, Nepalgunj is an important business area for many regions. Moreover, we can even stroll in the busy city of Nepalgunj.

Day 04:

Today we leave behind Nepalgunj and head towards Jhupal. After having our breakfast, we take an early morning flight to Jhupal. The flight would be approximately 35 minutes long. Moreover, Jhupal is the starting point of our trek. Descending through local villages and terraced fields we head to the Bheri River. Finally, we reach Jhupal. Overnight at Jhupal camp.

Day 05:

After having our early morning breakfast, we leave towards Hankhe. The walk would take approximately 4 and a half hours. Traversing through a suspension bridge we turn to the west following a trail past a hospital. Further, the trail ascends up the side of the unwooded, Thulo Bheri valley before going in Phoksundo river valley. On the way, we will be rewarded with the view of Kagmara Peak up the valley. Then, passing through walnut groves, Dhera, and Rahagaun villages, we mark our way down dense jungles and finally reach Hankhe.

Day 06:

Leaving behind Hankhe we move towards Reiji. Today, the trail goes up and down through the pathway. Descending along the wooded river bank we go through the lofty trail on the way to Reiji. The pathway leads through several streams along the way that offer a chance to cool off. Leaving the forests and the trail we pass through a grassy slope high above the river. Further, we go downhill through the dense forest followed by a rickety staircase leading to the river bank. Finally, we reach Reiji where we stay overnight.

Day 07:

After having our early morning breakfast, we head towards Phoksundo Lake. The walk would take approximately 5 hours. Wildering through the pine forests the trail goes along a river. There may be some ups and downs may be encountered in between. The trek goes through a cedar forest before reaching Palam village. Trekking up to a ridge we enjoy distant views of Phoksundo Lake along with a spectacular waterfall, one of the highest in Nepal. Finally, the trail through the birch forest and we reach Phoksundo lake.

Day 08:

Today we spent our day exploring the Phoksunda Lake. We hike to the village of Ringmo and it’s Tibetan Buddhist Monastery. Also, we will get chance to explore the culture of the local residents. Donned in cultural attire both men and women wear homespun clothing, dyed in maroon color. Not to mention, their cultural attire references Tibetan-style somba or dhocha (boots with upturned toes) for foot wear.

Day 09:

After having our early morning breakfast, we leave behind Phoksundo lake and head towards Lake Beach. It would take approximately 5 hours to reach Lake Beach. The trail leads through the remote areas, on the unsteady trail suspended on a gangway of wood supported on pegs driven into abysses in the rocks. Further the path takes us through a lush meadow that opens up into the flood plain of the Phoksundo Khola. Then we finally reach Lake Beach along the trail.

Day 10:

Today we head owards Manadala camp from Lake Beach. The walk would take about 5 hours. The trail moves along the Phoksundo Khola and another mountain stream, there is an old wooden bridge. Further, we ascend a sheep meadow through a lofty trail. Reaching the top we can sight the Kang-La pass. Finally we reach the Mandala Camp and stay there overnight.

Day 11:

Today the climb would be quite strenuous. From the top of Kang-la pass we get stunning views of the large valley parted by a gushing river. Then, we descend through a steep trail, meandering along the banks of a river. Traversing through the river we move pat the Yak Kharka, the grazing area. Consequently, crossing a log bridge we reach Shey Gompa.

Day 12:

Today the trek will take about 5-6 hours. After having our early morning breakfast we initiate our trek from Shey Gompa to Gela pass then heading to Namgung.
