Taktsang Monastery or Tiger's Nest Monastery was built in the late 17th century atop a cave made into the rock over 3,000 meters altitude above the Paro Valley. Although we refer to it as the Tiger's Nest in English, Taktsang means "tigress' lair" and gets its name from the mythology surrounding its founding.
According to mythology, Guru Rinpoche, an 8th-century Indian Buddhist instructor, was carried up the mountain by a student who transformed into a tigress. Guru Rinpoche remained in the cave for 3 years, 3 months, 3 days, and 3 hours for meditation after their arrival. When he finished, it was renamed Paro Taktsang and considered a sacred site.
