Additional Info

When is the best time for the Larkya La Pass Trek?

Spring (March to May) and autumn ( September to November) are the general best time for the Manaslu Circuit Trek. These times allow the most stable weather, drier trails, safe conditions, comfortable temperatures and clear mountain views. Spring brings rhododendrons, vibrant hills and warmer temperatures. It also provides good visibility and mountain views but mainly makes the trekking trail scenic which is perfect if you are a nature lover.

Autumn is best if you are mainly here for crystal-clear mountain views and photography. The air gets drier and crispier. October is the most popular and beautiful time for the trek and also for crossing Larkya La Pass safely with minimal snow.

Winter (December to February) is very difficult and only recommended for experienced trekkers. Due to heavy snowfall, temperatures become freezing and the trail on the Larkya La Pass may be blocked temporarily. Finally, the monsoon season (June to August) is generally not recommended due to higher risks than rewards. Heavy rainfall makes lower trails muddy, slippery while higher risks of landslides. Due to rainclouds mountain visibility also becomes close to zero past early mornings.

For adventure seeking trekkers who want to do the circuit trek in the off-season, Attentive Holiday Tours & Travel provides a 10% discount on the package cost.

Manaslu Circuit Trek Difficulty

Manaslu Circuit Trek is a challenging trek in the remote restricted area which requires good physical, cardiovascular and mental fitness. It involves crossing Larkya La Pass, a high altitude mountain pass at 5,170 meters which is also the maximum altitude of the trek. You will be trekking on the trails for 13 days which is a longer duration than other treks. Also, the average trek distance is around 6 to 8 hours per day which requires a very good fitness level. Manaslu trek features a diverse, rugged but non-technical trail with villages, suspension bridges, gorges, forests, meadows, rocky terrain, glacier lakes and high alpine snowy section near Larkya Pass. It also includes steep ascents and descents. The main difficulty is fatigue that comes with long days of trekking in high altitude and the demanding hike across the Larkya La Pass.

However, with proper preparation and our gradual itinerary with expert support from our guides, you can also successfully complete the trek as a beginner trekker. You should prepare by building your cardio and strength with cardio exercises, stair climbing and uphill hiking.

Altitude Sickness on the Manaslu Circuit Trek

Altitude sickness on the Manaslu Circuit Trek is quite significant due to exposure to very high altitudes. Above 3,000 meters elevation, there are risks and Manaslu trek crosses 3,000 meters altitude on just day 6 and reaches its maximum altitude of 5,170 meters during Larkya La Pass crossing. So it does carry a high risk of altitude sickness.

To minimize the risk, our 16 days itinerary has built-in acclimatization day and a very gradual pace. Also, drink 3 to 4 litres of water daily, trek at your own pace, get proper rest and follow your expert guide’s advice at all times. The guides monitor your health every day and watch for symptoms of altitude sickness. They adjust the trekking pace or recommend descending immediately to ensure your safety if necessary.

Your safety is always our top priority and we never compromise gradual elevation gain to shorten the itinerary.

Is accommodation during the Manaslu Circuit Trek on Teahouse basis?

Yes, accommodation during the Manaslu Circuit Trek is provided completely on teahouses that are run by the local families. From Machha Khola, the trek starting point till Bhulbhule, the trek ending point you will stay in cozy and homely teahouses with fresh and nutritious food, warm hospitality and local culture. Manaslu Circuit Trek accommodation is not as advanced as in other popular regions such as Everest or Annapurna.

Teahouses have thin wooden, mud or stone walls with basic facilities and rooms are usually provided on a twin-sharing basis with thin bedsheets and blankets. That is why carrying your own sleeping bag is important to survive the cold. Dining halls and toilets are generally communal, while hot showers, charging and Wi-Fi facilities are available mostly in lower villages at an additional fee. As you gain altitude, accommodation becomes more basic and facilities become scarce as well as unavailable. But they sure will provide a warm place to rest with awesome life-stories of the local people.

What kind of meals are available on the Manaslu Circuit Trek?

During the Manaslu Circuit Trek, a variety of nutritious meals are available on the trail. While in Kathmandu, we provide you only breakfast at your hotel so you can explore a variety of delicacies of your choice. On the trail, we provide you healthy and fresh meals on a full board basis i.e Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.

You can find all kinds of food options during the Manaslu trek from vegetarian, vegan to non-veg meals. Almost all teahouses serve similar kinds of food as they have similar menus. You can find the popular and traditional Nepali Dal Bhat (rice and lentil) along with Tibetan dishes like noodles, Thenduk and Thukpa. You can also find momo, chowmein, fried rice, pasta, oatmeals, bread, porridge, and so on. Mostly, vegetarian food is preferred during high altitude trekking since meat can be stale and cause food poisoning. Vegan meals are also widely available at every teahouse.

If you have any other dietary requirements, tell us about it at the time of booking so we can pre-arrange them on the trail.
